Travel site TripAdvisor and the American Hotel & Lodging Association said Wednesday they’re teaming to seek more eco-friendly practices in the hospitality industry.

The association says it has now integrated the minimum eco-friendly requirements of TripAdvisor’s GreenLeaders program into its own Green Guidelines for hotels.

Newton, Mass.-based TripAdvisor (Nasdaq: TRIP) says its program is “fundamentally changing the way travelers discover and experience eco-friendly accommodations in the U.S.”

Joining the program requires hotels to meet seven minimum requirements and complete a survey on its eco-friendly practices. The program has gained more than 2,000 participating properties since launching in April, TripAdvisor said. Hotels that take part get a special badge next to their listing on the TripAdvisor site.

Founded in 2000, TripAdvisor publishes user-generated reviews of hotels and other travel-related properties, coupled with travel search functions like booking for hotels, flights and rental cars. TripAdvisor became ranked the world’s largest travel-related website based on visitors in June 2010, as ranked by comScore, and has 200 million unique monthly visitors, according to Google Analytics.
